The Marathon is over

January 28th, 2007 by gwoo

Well, it’s over. We making the final commit to the competition repo, so we have to go with whats been done. I am sure anyone could look at the app and point out places where the usability is off or the code is no good, but all we had was 24 hours. 24 hours is not much time. We took it on as a personal challenge and I am pretty satisifed with the results.

We need to thank John Anderson for doing most of the design work. Armando Sosa fro providing a great wireframe, and Julian Sander for helping with the flex charting.

Yes, in the last minute we added the flex chart. It was planned from the beginning, because really you cannot manage inventory without some nice charts. We can continue to expand on this feature of the application. The other nice thing that the app does with tags is create unqiue identifiers. This is a way of subcategorizing tags. I think we can show some more ways of how to use it and it should help to search through tags in a more meaningful way.

Anyway, I am thoroughly tired now. I have pulled all nighters before, but nothing like this. Literally, only got out of the seat for life’s basic requirements. Otherwise, PhpNut and me were sitting in our respective chairs typing and talking.

And for an added bonus, I am going to see the Lakers v. Spurs in an hour.
zzzzzzzzz.

1 hr to go

There are still plenty of minor details that could be ironed out, but for the most part the application is complete. There is installer so its easy to setup. Most of the features are complete. I think its pretty impressive that a team of 2.5 could nearly complete this app in 24 hours. 124 commits and counting.
still an hour left, so we will be going through trying to put some finished touches on everything. Stay tuned….

/me gets more coffee

75%…time for the third wind?

January 28th, 2007 by gwoo

Its getting late. We have been coding for 18 hours. We have taken a few breaks in between, but we have done a pretty good job of staying focused. The first late night coffee was had a few hours ago and its about time to go back for more.

We are working on the final details over the next 6 hours. We need to finish up all the views and get the transactions working as expected. Then we can tie together everything and add the tagging.

I think we are still on track to finish everything by the deadline, but now that the pressure to finish is upon us, more focus is needed to get everything completed on time. We are pretty excited by whats been done so far.

50% there, oh yeah…

We are now well passed the half way point. In the last, 6 hours we finsihed off the user management, updated some more of the views, and began to hash out the final aspects of the application, and had a few more beers.

Finishing in 24 hrs is a real possibility. The next 6 hours will see the beer give way to coffee, and hopefully some more time to talk about the application here.

For now, here are some more screenshots.

25% done?

January 27th, 2007 by gwoo

Ok, so we just passed the theoretical 25% mark based on the 6 hours we have put into the application. Over the past 6 hours we got a dev server setup, we made some commits to the competition repo, we got a blog from blogture, we baked all the code, we removed the stuff we dont need, we added some elements, we integrated the layout, I drank two beers.

Psychic did the majority of the coding on the layout. PhpNut baked up all the code. I ironed out the details so we can have a working application. Some others will be helping over the next 24 hours (I hope).

Next, I hope to add some more details about the application and how it functions. Right now we are adding simple user authentication, along with some dummy data so we can start to visualize the application some more.

the marathon continues…..

We’re baking

As part of Phase 4, we almost started on time, which is usually a good sign. We decided to take part in the throwdown as a little personal challenge to see if 24 hours of code could produce a working application. We initially had in mind to build an issue tracker, but when we saw the categories for the throwdown announced the other day we thought it would be fun to fit the application into category numero dos ( inventory management).

My personal feeling is that “Web 2.0″ has brought on these types of challenges, so we should do a little ode to Web 2.0. This means trying to fit all of the possible cliches into the application.

First we have the name, “Itemizr”. Look we dropped the “e”.

Then we have the layout, fresh with a web 2.0 color palette and gradients all around.

Finally we round it out with a database design that includes you know what…Tags!

We plan to add a few goodies that will make this app unique. These plans will revealed over the next few hours.

Ok, back to the marathon.
